Contemporary Drawing: Key Concepts and Techniques

by: Margaret Davidson
Drawing is experiencing an unparalleled surge in the art world. Passé notions that once defined drawing as being a preparatory stage for painting or sculpture have long since been cast aside. Drawing is now fully recognized as its own art form—in the biennials, art fairs, museum exhibitions, and beyond. Drawing has come of age.

Contemporary artists are increasingly discovering that drawing is something unique and different from painting. It is an intense, sensitive, compelling, personal, and utterly direct art form, one with its own concepts, characteristics, and techniques.

Extra/Ordinary: Craft and Contemporary Art

Contemporary artists such as Ghada Amer and Clare Twomey have gained international reputations for work that transforms ordinary craft media and processes into extraordinary conceptual art, from Amer’s monumental stitched paintings to Twomey’s large, ceramics-based installations. Despite the amount of attention that curators and gallery owners have paid to these and many other conceptual artists who incorporate craft into their work, few art critics or scholars have explored the historical or conceptual significance of craft in contemporary art.

Under Blue Cup

by: Rosalind E. Krauss

In Under Blue Cup, Rosalind Krauss explores the relation of aesthetic mediums to memory--her own memory having been severely tested by a ruptured aneurysm that temporarily washed away much of her short-term memory. (The title, Under Blue Cup, comes from the legend on a flash card she used as a mnemonic tool during cognitive therapy.) Krauss emphasizes the medium as a form of remembering; contemporary artists in what she terms the "post-medium" condition reject that scaffolding.

Appreciating Art Lecture Series - Conceptual Art as Contemporary Art

What are the key characteristics of Conceptual Art and why has Conceptual Art been termed as "Modernism's nervous breakdown"? This lecture will situate the rise of Conceptual Art in the late Sixties where artists world-wide lost faith in painting and the notions of progress modernism stood for. This lecture will also present arguments to explain why art, during this period, became a way to question the meaning of art and in so doing, created an equivalent of a scientific paradigm shift in the world of art. It will conclude by explaining why after such a shift, the old ways of thinking about and making art were no longer possible. Main artists: Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Piero Manzoni, Yves Klein, Richard Long, On Kawara, Xu Bing, Ai Wei Wei.
